Another Fishing Tragedy in Uttara Kannada: Two Boats Capsize at Belekeri Port Within Two Days

By The News Observer Desk,
Karwar: The coastal region of Uttara Kannada district has been struck by a significant blow to its fishing community, with two fishing boats sinking in Belekeri within just two days, raising serious concerns.
On Friday night, a Persian boat named Durga Prasad reportedly sank near Jatti after colliding with a rock, according to preliminary information. The boat belonged to Shrikant Tandel, and the incident is estimated to have caused losses worth lakhs of rupees.
The lack of dredging at the harbor and the absence of a breakwater (wave barrier) continue to pose severe challenges for boat owners in the region. Boat owners allege that the lack of safety measures at sea has led to recurring incidents of boats sinking in this area.
“Every year, we suffer losses. The harbor is not safe, and the government has not taken adequate measures,” local fishermen expressed their frustration.
