Karwar: Hostel Students Stage Sudden Protest Over Poor Food Quality and Facilities

By The News Observer Desk,

Karwar: Over 50 female students of the Backward Classes Welfare Department’s girls’ hostel in Karwar staged an impromptu protest on Friday night, decrying the substandard food quality and lack of basic amenities at the facility. The demonstration erupted during dinner time, with students expressing outrage against the hostel warden’s alleged negligence.

The students, many of whom come from distant towns to pursue their education, alleged that they have been consistently provided with low-quality food, leading to health issues for some. They further accused the warden of maintaining unhygienic conditions, particularly in the hostel’s restrooms, and pressuring students to clean these facilities themselves when complaints were raised. Additionally, the students claimed the warden showed favoritism toward a select few while neglecting others, creating an atmosphere of discrimination.

Upon receiving news of the protest, Tahsildar N.F. Narohna rushed to the scene and listened to the students’ grievances. Acknowledging the seriousness of their concerns, Narohna assured the students that immediate steps would be taken to address their issues and ensure the provision of essential facilities.

District Student Union leader Raghu Naik, local officials, and residents were also present at the scene.
